1S20-3: The Eternal Clock – How the Hebrew Calendar Tells the Story of Messiah

One of the months in the Hebrew calendar called CHESHVAN can be either 29 days long or 30 days long.

This depended on when it was necessary to add an extra day to keep the calendar in line with the moon cycles.

Now long ago, people noticed that a year with the sun is a bit different from a year with the moon.

A year with the sun is about 365 days, but a year with the moon is about 354 days.

So, when we count 12 months of the moon, we have 11 days leftover.

That means 12 months of the moon don’t exactly match up with a year of the sun.

To fix this, ancient Hebrews made their calendar with some adjustments.

Every few years, they would add extra days or even a whole extra month to make sure their calendar matched up with the seasons.

This was important because their special feasts were tied to farming seasons.

If they didn’t adjust their calendar, they might end up celebrating a spring feast in winter when nothing was growing!

Like could you imagine celebrating Firstfruits in the dead of winter when nothing is growing?

So what’s the takeaway with this?

And why am I going into all of this crazy detail?

As I mentioned yesterday, understanding God’s MOEDIM or appointed seasons is helluva important if you want to align yourself with God’s ways as He’s woven them into the very fabric of the universe.

And it’s also key to understanding the work of the Messiah as follows:

PESACH (Passover): Represents Messiah’s substitutionary and atoning death. 

MATZAH (Feast of Unleavened Bread): The day when Yeshua when into the tomb.

BIKKURIM (FirstFruits): The day when Yeshua was resurrected as the FirstFruits from the dead.

SHAVUOT (Feast of Weeks or Pentecost): Shavuot occurred 50 days after FirstFruits and represents the day when the Holy Spirit descended upon a whole group of Jewish Yeshua believers from every corner of the world in great power. 

ROSH HASHANAH (Feast of Trumpets): This feast represents the second coming of Yeshua as he descends from the clouds as Messiah Ben David, Israel’s mighty warrior and King.

YOM KIPPUR (Day of Atonement): The High Priest of Israel entered the Holy of Holies to make a sacrifice on behalf of himself and Israel, representing the ultimate atoning work of Messiah.

SUKKOT (Feast of Tabernacles): This represents the ingathering of believers and the entry into the 1000-year Reign of Messiah when he returns.

Can you see now how these feasts are so important?

I can’t for the life of me understand why the Christian church would wanna celebrate holidays like Christmas and Easter when God has already established divine festivals that point to the work of His son.
