“I will raise up for myself a faithful cohen
who will do what I want and what I intend.
I will make his family faithful,
and he will serve in the presence
of my anointed one forever.”
-1 Samuel 2:35
We’re in the midst of discussing who the Lord was referring to when He said “I will raise up for myself a faithful cohen”.
Who did that end up being?
Historically speaking, we know it was Zadok.
But how do we know he possessed the legit credentials?
Well, let’s start at the beginning.
The first High Priest was Aaron of the Tribe of Levi.
We know he had a number of sons…
But two sons stand out in particular:
Nadav and Avihu.
Remember what happened to these two sons?
God killed them for disrespecting Him.
After that tragedy, God made two decisions.
Eleazar (Aaron’s oldest son) and his descendants would be the line of High Priests.
And Ithamar (Aaron’s youngest son) would be the line of common priests.
When I say “common priests”, I’m talking about the blue-collar Levite laborers.
These were the folks who maintained the Tabernacle and later the Temple.
Are you with me so far?
Aaron’s oldest son Eleazar would represent the line of High Priests…
And…
Aaron’s youngest son Ithamar would represent the common priests.
However, for some reason that still puzzles historians, Eli became the High Priest even though he was from the line of Ithamar.
In other words, we don’t know why a descendant of Eleazar didn’t become a High Priest instead of Eli.
Although I can’t say for sure (and neither can anybody else), I’m sure it happened due to ugly political infighting which has been the way of man since the beginning of time.
Anyways, God would temporarily solve the situation because he would install Zadok as High Priest who was from the proper line of Eleazar.
I say “temporarily” because afterwards King Solomon would install a High Priest named Abiathar who was a descendant from the illegitimate line of Eli.
But from an eternal perspective, none of this back and forth nonsense of illegitimate High Priests usurping legitimate High Priests wouldn’t matter anyway…
Because the Lord has determined which line will rule over Israel.
It starts with David…
And will end and remain forever with a descendant of David…
Interestingly, this descendant will serve as BOTH a High Priest and King for Israel.
That person’s name is Yeshua.
NEXT TIME WE MEET WE BEGIN 1 SAMUEL CHAPTER THREE
Karl says
I’m confused in your comments… in two posts now you have mentioned that Solomon reinstated Abiathar, but 2nd Kings says this…
So Solomon removed Abiathar from being priest to the Lord, that he might fulfill the word of the Lord which He spoke concerning the house of Eli at Shiloh.

Am I missing another story concerning the placement and assignment of the hight priests?
