“Stop your proud boasting!
Don’t let arrogance come from your mouth!
For Adonai is a God of knowledge,
and he appraises actions.”
-1 Samuel 2:3
In verse 3 Hannah speaks to KOL YISRAEL or the whole community of Israel.
She tells them how they should behave before a Holy God to whom nothing can be compared.
And the answer is Israel should adopt an attitude of humbleness.
They should not be prideful or arrogant.
We see this theme come up often in the Scriptures.
For example, mentioned among the 7 things the Lord hates is a “haughty look”.
Why is this so important?
Because it goes against fleshly mankind’s typical beliefs on how the world works…
Namely, the idea that we are in control of our own destiny…
That ultimately God is NOT sovereign and is NOT in complete control of every aspect of our lives…
The idea that we can be our own gods can be traced straight back to the temptation in the Garden of Eden.
“For God knows that when
you eat from it your eyes will
be opened, and you will be like
God, knowing good and evil.”
-Genesis 3:5
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the birth of the New Age movement began in Genesis Chapter 3.
The truth is man cannot control his own destiny…
In spite of what all of the mindset life coaches and the Law of Attraction crowd tells you.
I betcha if you honestly assess your life, you’ll discover what I’m saying is true.
That there have been a ton of circumstances and events that happened outside of your control…
Regardless of what “frequency you were vibrating at”…
Or how you were FEELING at the moment…
Deuteronomy 8:18 says…
“But remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.”
Did you catch that?
It is the Lord who gives you the ability to produce wealth.
Not some mystical mind power that allows you to “conceive whatever you believe” as a lot of the self help gurus promote.
Bottomline, that is why the Lord wants you to be humble…
Because being humble is a form of acknowledgment that ultimately it is God who is in control of all things.
While the opposite is also true…
When you’re arrogant and boastful, you’re basically saying you’re the one in control of your life…
You’re the one who earned the money you have…
You’re the own who accomplished all the amazing things in your life…
It is impossible to be prideful and also give glory to God at the same time.
Ya feel me homie?
CONNECTING THIS TEACHING TO THE NEW TESTAMENT
“No one can serve two masters.
Either you will hate the one
and love the other,
or you will be devoted to the one
and despise the other.
You cannot serve both God and money.”
-Matthew 6:24
