“But Sha’ul sent messengers to David’s house to watch for him and kill him in the morning. Mikhal David’s wife told him, ‘If you don’t save your life tonight, tomorrow you’ll be dead.'”-1 Samuel 19:11
After Saul’s second failed attempt on David’s life, David escapes and is now nowhere to be found.
Since David has married Michal (Saul’s youngest daughter), Saul is confident that David will return to his wife for protection.
So he sends “messengers” to be on the lookout for him when he returns.
You should be familiar with the Hebrew word for “messenger”.
It is MALACH and while it does mean “messenger”, the word is often translated as “angel”.
In fact, it is the only Hebrew word that is translated into “angel”.
Yet, depending on the context, the word carries different meanings.
The problem is to our 21st century ears, when we hear the word “messenger”, we think of a low-level person.
Someone who is just blindly following orders without any authority or power.
However, that is not the Biblical sense of the word.
In the Biblical sense, it is much better to think of a MALACH as a “representative” of a higher authority.
For example, as far as I know, Yeshua isn’t specifically referred to as a MALACH in the Bible…
Yet, as a perfect representative of God, in a sense, he was a messenger sent from God…
He was a man who possessed the full authority of God…even the authority to forgive sins.
Similarly, the MALACHIM that appear in Scripture, are usually much more than mere messengers who come to deliver God’s Word.
They carry a degree of authority and power to carry out the Almighty’s Will…
And that power sometimes includes the divine imperative to cause some serious destruction…as what those two MALACHIM did to Sodom and Gomorrah.
So what’s the takeaway for today?
Well, do you know that as a believer, you also are a “messenger” for God?
I’m not just talking about somebody who delivers God’s Word, although that is an important part of your mission.
You have also been given great authority and power to carry out God’s Will.
Yeshua tells us the power we’ve been given includes the authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy.
We’re told that NOTHING will harm us.
AMEN!
