Interestingly, David has formed a strong personal and spiritual bond with the son of the man (Jonathan) who would become his arch-enemy (Saul).
As I said earlier, this is the same kind of covenant bond that should exist among all true believers who profess allegiance to the God of Israel.
I should emphasize I’m talking about a spiritual bond here.
Of course, on an earthly level, or in terms of personality traits, it’s understood we’re NOT gonna bond with everyone.
It’s natural for us to bond with those who are in the same age group and share the same interests as us.
And that’s totally cool.
The link that connects believers is through Messiah, not individual believer to believer.
Now here’s what’s interesting about Jonathan’s situation.
In due time, he is going to be forced to choose between his father King Saul, and David who is the God-ordained-king-in-waiting.
This shouldn’t surprise us.
David is the prototype for the future God-anointed Messiah while Saul is the prototype for the future anti-Christ.
Now here’s the thing.
Jonathan is gonna try his best to maintain loyalty to both his dad and David.
But he will ultimately fail.
God will force him to choose between the God-ordained King and the anti-King.
And that’s your takeaway for today.
While it is the world’s way to always be seeking to appease a wicked and perverse world, that is not God’s way.
If you are truly one of God’s, He will polarize you to the extent that you will have to choose between Him or the world.
You won’t be able to keep one foot in the comfortable temporal world and the other in God’s invisible spiritual kingdom.
It may seem possible for a time but eventually, the gap between the two will grow so big, you’ll be forced to make a choice which is what happened to Jonathan.
And unfortunately, we know many will choose the world.
Messiah said this would happen.
“For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.”
Ironically, it’s the institutional church that tries its darndest to straddle the fence between the world and God’s eternal commands.
Why else do you think we have churches that conduct gay marriages in the name of Christ?
Or churches that stand against Israel for Palestine?
To me, that’s the height of hypocrisy, if you think about it.
To proclaim faith in the Jewish savior…
A faith that grafts you into the commonwealth of Israel…
Yet you stand against His Chosen People?!
Anyway, let me close with this…
No matter what your station in life…
If you are one of God’s…
And you are living a life that is of the world…
You know, a world that worships money, sex, and status…
That is gonna change.
God is gonna force you to choose between the eternal and the earthly.
I can’t say exactly what form that will take for you.
For some, it may mean giving up that cushy corporate job to serve the Lord in ministry.
For others, it may mean separating from those buddies of yours whose only joy in life is getting high and blind drunk on the weekends (or even in the middle of the week).
If you’re a Jew living in the Diaspora, it may mean the country you’re in becomes so anti-Semitic, to survive you have no choice but to leave and head back to the land God has set apart for you per the Biblical command.
Whatever form it takes…
If you say “Yes” to God, that means you say “No” to the world.
You can’t have it both ways.
Over and out.
CONNECTING THIS TEACHING TO THE NEW TESTAMENT
“No one can serve two masters.
Either you will hate the one
and love the other,
or you will be devoted to the one
and despise the other.
You cannot serve
both God and money.”
-Matthew 6:24
