When most people think about the battle between David and Goliath, they think the story is all about how God can use an underdog to defeat a much bigger and stronger opponent.
Even the phrase “a battle of David and Goliath” has entered our common vernacular to refer to a weak party who faces a big challenge.
While that lesson is certainly there, it’s not the key takeaway to be extracted from this heroic tale.
We need to stay focused on the context to get the main spiritual lesson.
So what is the context?
It is that God rejected the first king of Israel (Saul), and in his place chose David.
As a result, the Holy Spirit departed from Saul to be replaced by a spirit that causes evil.
David, on the other hand, was filled with God’s spirit and now possessed divine power, wisdom, and understanding.
So that’s the situation you gotta focus on.
Got it?
Now, here’s the thing.
Notice how Saul and David both received God’s Spirit before they began their reigns.
In other words, both men were born again.
But one man (Saul) decided to NOT follow and submit to God’s Holy Spirit while the other man (David) did.
And that’s your takeaway.
Because all believers are either like Saul or David.
When you were born again, you received the Holy Spirit…
But that doesn’t mean you’ll automatically submit to the Spirit.
You have to CHOOSE to walk in the Spirit and be guided by the YETSER TOV (good inclination).
You have to CHOOSE to fight against the temptations of the flesh and not obey the YETSER HARA (evil inclination).
Some believers will make it…
Unfortunately, I believe most won’t…
Because the road to life is narrow and few find it.
Ya feel me?
This is the proper spiritual context of this story I want you to get.
CONNECTING THIS TEACHING TO THE NEW TESTAMENT
“Enter through the narrow gate.
For wide is the gate and broad
is the road that leads to destruction,
and many enter through it.
But small is the gate and narrow
the road that leads to life,
and only a few find it.”
-Matthew 7:13-14
