“No ‘Anakim were left in
the land of the people of Israel-
only in ‘Azah, Gat and Ashdod
did some remain.”
-Joshua 11:22
So per this verse, we see there were some Anakim left living among the Philistines.
Am I saying Goliath was an Anakim?
Yeah, man, that’s exactly what I’m saying.
These were scary big dudes who caused the Israelite soldiers to stay in hiding among rocks in the Valley of Elah.
Now, let’s talk a little bit about the formidable armor that Goliath wore.
We’re told he wore a big bronze helmet on his head and a special bronze armor that was super heavy, weighing more than 100 pounds.
This armor was made like shingles on a roof, with individual bronze plates overlapping each other to protect against arrows and sword hits.
Don’t confuse this with a suit of mail which was made of small bronze loops tightly strung together, allowing for more flexibility and less weight.
That was a later innovation.
We actually know what Goliath’s armor looked like because we’ve got ancient pictures from the Assyrians showing their charioteers donning similar scale-like armor.
Anyway, so here’s what’s coming to me in terms of a takeaway.
Have you ever felt super intimidated and on the verge of giving up because of seemingly insurmountable circumstances?
Metaphorically speaking, I feel like that’s what Goliath represented.
This giant symbolizes all of the obstacles that cause us to throw in the towel and run scared like little rabbits.
In terms of the spiritual lesson we’re going to derive from this story, that’s how I want you to think about it.
Because we’re going to learn through David how to deal with the big bad ugly monsters in our life…
Whether they be literal giants like Goliath…
Or difficult life situations…
Ya feel me?
Alright, see ya all next time.
