“Sha’ul dressed David in his own armor — he put a bronze helmet on his head and gave him armor plate to wear. David buckled his sword on his armor and tried to walk, but he wasn’t used to such equipment. David said to Sha’ul, ‘I can’t move wearing these things, because I’m not used to them.’ So David took them off.”-1 Samuel 17:38-39
Realizing he doesn’t have much of a choice, Saul is now convinced.
David will be the one he will send out to battle the giant Goliath.
Still, Saul knew his kingdom and throne were on the line, so he wanted to make sure to equip David with every possible advantage he could give him.
So what did Saul do?
He offered to dress David up in his armor (armor that was just gathering dust anyway).
Heck, at least David would look half respectable on the battlefield.
So David puts on the king’s armor…
But immediately he feels uncomfortable.
“I can’t move in these things, because I’m not used to them”.
This shouldn’t have come as a big surprise.
Recall Saul was a tall man for his time while David was of average height.
On top of that, the armor was heavy and would prevent David from being able to move quickly.
Now when David said he couldn’t move with Saul’s armor on, he was simply expressing a literal fact.
But little did he know, he had also expressed a great spiritual truth we should all take to heart.
We should fight our battles using the weapons of warfare the Lord has uniquely given us.
In other words, we shouldn’t seek to clothe ourselves in the armor of another…
Neither should we use the weapons of the world to fight God’s battles.
Ya feel me?
Why should a believer utilize the strength of the world in a spiritual battle?
And yes, the battle between David and Goliath was a SPIRITUAL battle.
Every God-ordained or God-propagated war is spiritual.
Plus, don’t forget that Saul is the pattern of the anti-King or anti-Christ.
So why would David, who is God’s righteous king, use the weapons and armor of the anti-King?
I’m not saying David should have gone to the battlefield unarmed.
I’m saying his weapons were to be things that reflected who he was.
At this time, he was a shepherd.
He was not yet a warrior-king.
So it is only proper that David use a weapon that reflects who he uniquely is…
Rather than imitating and trying to be someone else.
We also see the same pattern in Yeshua’s ministry.
When he first came to earth, he came as a shepherd, and he used the shepherd’s “weapon” of self-sacrifice on behalf of his flock to accomplish his Father’s will during his first visit.
When Yeshua returns it will be as a warrior-king.
During this second visit, Yeshua will be brandishing a sword to level destruction on the enemies of Israel, again to accomplish His Father’s Will.
So I find the takeaway for today to be particularly inspiring.
If you’re a believer, why in the heck would you rely on the methods and means of the world to fight your battles here on earth?
If you’ve ever wondered why gentile methods that work for gentiles don’t work for you, that’s why.
It’s because you’re using the weapons of the uncircumcised to fight your battles.
Ya feeling me here homie?
The circumcised should NOT use the weapons of the uncircumcised to fight their spiritual battles.
So go forth with the weapons of Adonai in your hands!
And then victory shall be yours!
Guaranteed!
