Let’s understand that throughout history and spiritually, God is preparing His people for a king.
This is by necessity.
Why?
Because it is the nature of man that we simply can’t do right when left to our own devices.
We need a strong leader to guide us and keep us on the straight and narrow path.
Even during the 1000-year rule of the Messiah, we’ll still need a leader to keep our behavior in check.
That’s something to think about.
I mean IF, of our own power, we were capable of living in harmony with God, we wouldn’t need a savior now, would we?
As with many things in life, we need to follow God’s plan and timing, or else something that seems right could go VERY wrong.
Israel’s election of Saul to be their king was a perfect example of this.
The truth is, and contrary to popular opinion on the matter, God DID want Israel to have a king.
But it had to happen according to His perfect timing.
The problem is the leaders of Israel were so darn impatient.
They were in such a rush they told Samuel, who was a great judge and prophet chosen by God, to step down and give them their darn king.
God knew the timing wasn’t right.
But the people simply could not or would not wait.
They wanted a king and they wanted a king NOW…
A king who fit gentile ideals of what an earthly ruler should be like…
Someone tall, handsome, and who possessed a high degree of self-determination.
So to teach them a lesson, God gave them Saul.
And boy was that a disaster of gargantuan proportions.
Because the people had the WRONG attitude…
They ended up with the WRONG king…
At the WRONG time…
With the WRONG traits…
Heck, Saul even came from the WRONG tribe…
The takeaway here is huge.
However, in 1st Samuel 17, the tide has now turned.
In Bethlehem of Judah, a new king named David has been anointed.
This man will be the RIGHT king…
Who came at the RIGHT time…
Who possesses the RIGHT traits…
And who hails from the RIGHT tribe.
See, God had to show the people what happens when you make hurried choices out of your selfish and ungodly desires.
That’s why He first gave them Saul.
But now, in David, he has given them the right king…
So the people would see the HUGE difference…
And learn from their mistakes…
And understand the Lord’s timing is always right.
Boy, there are so many incredible takeaways here, my head is exploding, and I feel like I could write all day.
But I gotta get to work.
So I’ll stop for today.
But if this has triggered any interesting takeaways on your end, please share in the comments!
See you soon!
