Samuel may have fired Saul…
But Saul had zero intention of giving up his throne.
And don’t think Saul didn’t properly comprehend the situation when Samuel told him he was no longer king.
He knew darn well he had been axed, and that it was to take effect immediately.
The problem was the same rebellious spirit that characterizes Satan remained in Saul.
As Saul had demonstrated over and over again, he was a disobedient man who refused to accept God’s judgment against him.
Once Samuel returned to his hometown, there was no other member of the king’s court who would’ve had the balls to challenge Saul’s authority.
Plus, at this time, I don’t think anyone but Saul and Samuel knew that God no longer supported Saul.
Keep in mind, that Saul even tried to make it look like Samuel still supported him by bringing him to a public event (the festival that took place at Gilgal to celebrate the victory of Amalek), so nobody would know the truth.
And Samuel knew darn well he was being used by King Saul.
The only question is why would he agree to participate in this big hoax?
Maybe Samuel thought it was important for Israel to have a leader because the next king hadn’t yet been revealed.
There was also the practical consideration that the Philistines were still a major threat.
Without a leader, Israel would appear weak to their outside enemies.
This would encourage the Philistines to bolster their presence in the region.
So here’s the takeaway I’m getting for today.
Ever sinned in private and then assumed everything was okay because no one else knew about it?
You know what I’m talking about, right?
Those office supplies you ripped off from your company because you knew no one would notice.
The adulterous sexual escapades you go on behind your spouse’s back.
The secret thoughts of hatred you harbor toward another person because you’re jealous of their success in this life.
Just like Saul, you figure as long as no one knows you’re no longer “king”, everything will be cool.
Well, I’m here to tell you things aren’t gonna be cool no matter what BS facade you’ve created to show the contrary.
Whatever sins you’ve committed in the dark, God knows about them, and will eventually bring them to the light as we’re about to see what He does with Saul’s life
That’s why repentance is so important.
Once you repent, the burden will be lifted, and you’ll no longer have anything to hide.
On the other hand, if you don’t repent, your behavior is the same as Saul’s.
Ya feel me?
CONNECTING THIS TEACHING TO THE NEW TESTAMENT
“There is nothing concealed
that will not be disclosed
or hidden that will not
be made known.
What you have said in
the dark will be heard
in the daylight, and what
you have whispered in
the ear in the inner rooms
will be proclaimed from
the roofs.”
-Luke 12:2-3
“Have nothing to do with
the fruitless deeds of darkness,
but rather expose them.
It is shameful even to mention
what the disobedient do in secret.”
-Ephesians 5:11-12
“Therefore judge nothing
before the appointed time;
wait until the Lord comes.
He will bring to light what
is hidden in darkness and will
expose the motives of the heart.
At that time each will receive
their praise from God.“
-1 Corinthians 4:5
“Nothing in all creation is
hidden from God’s sight.
Everything is uncovered
and laid bare before the
eyes of him to whom
we must give account.”
-Hebrews 4:13
