“One day, when Elkanah was sacrificing, he gave a portion of the sacrifice to his wife P’ninah and portions to each of her sons and daughters; but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved Hannah, even though Adonai had kept her from having children.”-1 Samuel 1:4-5
I’ve got a quiz question for you.
So we’re told when Elkanah was sacrificing, he gave a portion of his sacrifice to his wife P’ninah and portions to each of her sons and daughters…
But to Hannah he gave a double portion.
So here’s my question…
Out of the 5 types of sacrifices we studied in Leviticus, which one was Elkanah offering up?
Here’s a list of the 5 basic sacrifices:
OLAH (Burnt Offering)
MINCHAH (Grain Offering)
ZEVAH (Peace Offering)
HATTA-AT (Purification Offering)
ASHAM (Guilt Offering)
So any idea which one it might be?
Here’s a hint…
Notice this sacrifice was one that allowed the worshipper to eat a portion of it.
So if you said the ZEVAH, BINGO!
You nailed it.
Actually, to be more precise, Elkanah was offering up what’s called a ZEVAH SHELAMIM.
This was the one sacrifice that was both voluntary and allowed the worshipper to keep the remainder of the animal.
If you got the answer right, pat yourself on the back.
Because 99.9% of Christian pastors, preachers or teachers anywhere in the world would NOT know the answer to this question…
And I imagine they’d sneer at an article like this thinking it’s completely useless because we’re now under the New Covenant blah, blah, blah..
Don’t be like them…
They can sneer and poke fun of those who take the time to learn God’s Word all they want…
But they do so to their own destruction.
Alright, let me close with another more basic Bible quiz question…
So now we know Elkanah offered up a ZEVAH SHELAMIM.
My next question is…
Which sacrifices did he offer up BEFORE the Zevah Shelamim?
The answer is the OLAH and the MINCHAH.
Simply because those are the preliminary offerings that must be performed FIRST before any other types of sacrifices can be offered up.
Alrighty, that does it for today.
See ya all next time.
