“King David grew old,
The years took their toll,
and he couldn’t get warm
even when they covered
him with bedclothes.”
-1 Kings 1:1
I wanna share an interesting Hebrew expression with you.
It is BO YIMMIM.
Literally, it means, “He came with days.”
This expression appears in the 1st verse of 1 Kings Chapter 1, where we’re told “the years took their toll” on David.
Other Bible translations will say something like David was “stricken in years.”
The problem is that our English Bibles are missing an important nuance.
This phrase actually carries a very positive nuance to it.
It refers to a life filled with meaning and purpose.
It doesn’t just mean someone lived a long life.
But those years were fruitful.
And this phrase is being applied to David.
The truth of the matter is, you can live a long life but not have done anything meaningful during those years.
We’ve all heard the stories of those who scrambled after worldly riches all their lives.
They made a ton of money.
They chased power.
They stayed busy every day.
But when they look back, they feel empty.
All that effort… and very little peace.
Why did that happen?
Because in the end, they stacked up a pile of things that won’t last.
Great people look back and see days that meant something.
Days when they helped people.
Days that mattered.
A wicked person?
He has a life full of wasted days.
Days filled with porn and prostitution.
And a long list of excuses.
That’s your takeaway for today.
What are you prioritizing in your life?
Is it money?
Is it sex?
Is it social status?
Lemme be clear.
There ain’t anything wrong with those things.
But if your foundation isn’t built on God and His Word…
You’re building your life on shifting sand that will turn into big regret in the end.
We’re about to study the life of the great King Solomon.
So let me leave you with his closing words from Ecclesiastes.
These verses followed 12 chapters of Solomon, explaining that wealth and pleasure don’t satisfy.
That time and chance happen to everyone.
Here are the verses:
“Now all has been heard;
here is the conclusion of the matter:
Fear God and keep His commandments,
for this is the whole duty of man.
For God will bring every deed into judgment,
including every hidden thing,
whether it is good or evil.”
— Ecclesiastes 12:13–14
