When we last left off, Bathsheba had just informed David that Adoniyah had crowned himself king.
Now, that wasn’t exactly true.
She was just telling David what Nathan had told her.
And we all know that Nathan had misunderstood the situation.
Again, Adoniyah had only proclaimed himself a prince-in-waiting or a NAGID in Hebrew.
And honestly, David probably took that news with a combination of alarm and skepticism.
The truth is, leaders hear stories all the time that more often than not end up just being rumors or super exaggerated.
Well, after Bathsheba gives David the news, Nathan appears.
He bows down to David as Bathsheba did, showing that even a chosen prophet of God had to defer to the king.
Next, pretending he had no idea that Bathsheba had just told David what Adoniyah was doing, Nathan pretty much repeats what Bathsheba said.
Nathan even jazzes up his story a bit by saying all those in attendance at Adoniyah’s banquet were cheering out loud and shouting, “Long live King Adoniyah!”
Nathan is expressing shock that if David had changed his mind about making Solomon king, why in the world wasn’t he informed?
That was the psychological ploy at work here.
From verse 21, Bathsheba jumps back in and tells David that if he doesn’t do something, she and her son Solomon are toast.
She’s correct.
In those days, a newly crowned king would summarily execute those he perceived to be a threat to his throne, even if they were family members.
In Hebrew, Bathsheba says that she and her son would be seen as CHATTA.
Roughly translated, this means “rebels” or “criminals.”
If Adoniyah became king, Nathan would have no choice but to condemn him.
The consequences of that action would be dire indeed.
For sure, Adoniyah would have executed Bathsheba and Solomon.
A king simply doesn’t like competition.
Again, keep in mind, all of this is happening at a fast and furious pace…literally within a couple of hours since Adoniyah started his party.
Well, after hearing all of this, David is finally roused from his slumber.
So here’s the takeaway coming to me.
David was in a slumber until the sheer seriousness of the matter forced him to wake up and act.
Now, isn’t the world today in a similar state as David was back then?
The world is half asleep and completely unaware that the Messianic Age is fast approaching…especially with all that’s going on in the Middle East.
Your average person has no idea of the significance of Israel, God’s son, and how events are playing out EXACTLY as the Bible has predicted.
And are we not to be like Bathsheba and Nathan and rush into David’s bedroom to warn a world dying in their sins to wake the hell up because the Day of the Lord is near?
Ya feel me?
Let those who have ears to hear, LISTEN!
Done.
CONNECTING THIS TEACHING TO THE NEW TESTAMENT
“But as the days of Noah were,
so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
For as in the days that were before the flood
they were eating and drinking,
marrying and giving in marriage,
until the day that Noah entered into the ark,
And knew not until the flood came,
and took them all away;
so shall also the coming
of the Son of man be.”
-Matthew 24:37-39
