While Adoniyah is celebrating, Nathan knows he has to act quickly, or Adoniyah could very well end up becoming king.
He rushes to Bathsheba and tells her to inform David that Adoniyah has declared himself king.
This wasn’t really true, but Nathan thought that’s what happened.
Nathan then coaches Bathsheba, giving her the exact words she is to tell David.
Afterward, Nathan will “coincidentally” drop in to verify what Bathsheba just informed her husband and then urge David to act quickly lest Solomon lose his right to the throne.
All of this happened within hours of Adoniyah starting his banquet.
Bathsheba goes to her now feeble husband and tells him…
“My lord, king, didn’t you swear to your servant, ‘Your son Shlomo will be king after me; he will sit on my throne’? So why is Adoniyah, king?’
Bathsheba is making a good point.
But this does raise an important question.
When did God make the promise that Solomon would be king?
The truth is, up until now, we haven’t been given such a promise.
We do get a vague implication that Solomon would be blessed in the following verses:
“David comforted his wife Bat-Sheva, came to her and went to bed with her; she gave birth to a son and named him Shlomo. ADONAI loved him and sent through Natan the prophet to have him named Y’didyah [loved by God], for ADONAI’s sake.”-2 Samuel 12:24-25
But there is no clear promise that the Lord would make Solomon king in these verses.
So, is there anywhere in the Scriptures where God promises that Solomon will be King?
Yes, there is.
But not in the Bible books we’ve studied up until now.
We actually have to go to 1st Chronicles to find that declaration.
Here it is:
“My son,” said David to Shlomo, “my heart was set on building a house for the name of ADONAI my God. But a message from ADONAI came to me, ‘You have shed much blood and fought great wars. You are not to build a house for my name, because you have shed so much blood on the earth in my sight. But you will have a son who will be a man of rest. I will give him rest from all his enemies that surround him; for his name is to be Shlomo, and during his reign I will give peace and quiet to Isra’el. It is he who will build a house for my name. He will be my son and I will be his father, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Isra’el forever.‘”-1 Chronicles 22:7-10
So here’s the thing.
The announcement that Solomon would be king had to come from a divine source.
That’s why the prophet Nathan had to be the one to deliver the message.
A divine message had to be delivered by God’s official messenger.
And that’s your takeaway for today.
Divine authority is important.
Many people in the world say they are following the true king anointed by God.
The Muslims have their prophet, Mohammed.
India has thousands of gurus in Hinduism.
The New Age has its Law of Attraction coaches.
So who are ya gonna listen to?
The self-proclaimed Adoniyahs of the world?
Or a ruler who has been anointed by the true God of Israel.
Ya feel me?
Done.
