Alrighty, we’re nearing the end of our review of the key events leading up to the books of the Kings.
As 2nd Samuel closes, David is about to pass on to the next world and hand the throne to his son, Solomon.
But if there’s one thing we’ve learned about David’s life, it’s this.
Nothing is ever simple.
This transition is gonna have its complications.
The book of 1st Kings opens with uncertainty.
Soon we’ll see the glory of Solomon’s kingdom.
But then everything will come crashing down, like Humpty Dumpty.
In other words, shattered beyond repair.
The books of 1st and 2nd Kings cover roughly 450 years, from about 1015 B.C. to around 560 B.C.
Now here’s what you gotta understand.
These books are told from a prophetic perspective.
In other words, they’re not mere history.
Ya feel me here?
Read these verses:
“I will raise up your offspring after you
your own flesh and blood to succeed you
and I will firmly establish his kingdom
He is the one who will build
a house for My holy Name
and I will establish the throne
of his kingdom forever
I will be his Father
and he will be My son
When he does what is wrong
I will discipline him with a rod
wielded by the hands of men
with floggings from human hands
But My faithful love
will never be taken away from him
as I took it away from Saul
whom I removed from before you
Your house and your kingdom
will endure forever before Me and
your throne will be established forever“
-2 Samuel 7:12-16
Again, the point is that although the books of Samuel and Kings are jam-packed with historical facts, Scripture is not just an impartial recording of the progress of nations.
It’s a record of how the Lord is guiding history.
And that’s your takeaway for today.
History is HIS story.
And until you understand that…
You will never truly understand the political events going on in the world today.
Ya feel me?
See ya all next time.
